Voter advocacy group continues fight against Missouri’s redistricting with new lawsuit

A new lawsuit filed Monday by voter advocacy group People Not Politicians could force Secretary of State Denny Hoskins to decide if a referendum challenging Missouri’s newly-redistricted map will appear on the ballot in November.

Just last week, Secretary Hoskins confirmed the new map after the Missouri Supreme Court decided to uphold it.

The newly-filed lawsuit accuses Hoskins and Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway of pushing the new congressional map to be implemented despite referendum efforts still awaiting a formal decision.

People Not Politicians created a referendum petition seeking to block the redistricted map and force a statewide vote, which they submitted 300,000 signatures for in December.

The lawsuit argues that, due to Hoskins not having rejected or certified the petition yet, it is impossible to know whether the bill that instituted the redistricted map is truly in effect.

The lawsuit also asks the court to halt the implementation of the new congressional map until the legal challenge is resolved.
