Man from Elkland Dies in Head-On Crash Near Springfield

A man from Elkland is dead after being involved in a head-on car crash north of Springfield.

Highway Patrol troopers say 79-year-old Harold Williams was driving southbound on Highway 65 five miles north of Springfield when he crossed into the northbound lanes.

While driving on the road side of the highway, he crashed into an oncoming vehicle. Investigators say impairment does not appear to be the cause of the crash at this time.

Both Williams and the driver of the other vehicle were hospitalized with serious injuries. Williams later died of his injuries, while the other driver remains hospitalized.

It is fatality number 81 for MSHP Troop D in its area so far in 2024.
