As part of a multiyear effort, City Utilities of Springfield is replacing aging natural gas infrastructure across the city.
CU announced Thursday that crews have already replaced 6.1 miles of natural gas main in north Springfield as part of the project.
In multiple phases over the next four years, crews will replace approximately 38 miles of plastic natural gas main and about 3,300 service lines throughout the city.
Much of the funding for the project comes from $30 million in federal grants and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
