Hotel of Terror Owner Comes Short Of Verified Signatures In Eminent Domain Fight

The owner of Springfield’s Hotel of Terror on north Main Street has run into yet another stumbling block in his effort to stop the city from taking his building through eminent domain.

Springfield’s city clerk says Sterling Mathis did not obtain enough valid signatures to challenge the eminent domain process.

Mathis needed to gather 1,499 valid signatures. He collected 2,400, but the city clerk says he came up 125 signatures short by the time all of them were checked for verification.

The owner has until February 9th to obtain the remaining signatures needed to challenge the city’s decision and potentially send the matter to a public vote.
