Mayor McClure Delivers His Final State of the City Address

Springfield Mayor Ken McClure has delivered his final State of the City address.

He thanked voters for electing him four times.

He spoke about challenges that he feels are facing Springfield in the coming years including gun violence among young people.

He believes that state gun laws need to be consistent with federal gun laws.

He also called for city council members to be paid.

A new mayor will be elected next April.

Nixa Aquatic Center To Reopen Monday

The Nixa Aquatic Center will re-open Monday. It has been closed for about a year after a leak was found in the pool.

The city had to hire a pool engineering company to find a way to repair the pool.

Nixa city officials say the underground piping for the pool was replaced.

Springfield Neighborhood Holding Cleanup Event

The Grant Beach neighborhood in Springfield is preparing to hold a cleanup event for this Saturday.

Vice President of the neighborhood Pauletta Dunn says volunteers will clean up the neighborhood, collect all the metal that can be recycled, and reinvest that money back into the neighborhood.

Dunn says volunteers will take anything that isn’t hazardous waste, tires, or T.V. sets. Volunteers should meet in the parking lot across from Central Assemblies on Boonville.

Man from Waynesville Killed in Single-Car Crash on Highway 17

A man from Waynesville is dead following a car crash along Highway 17.

Investigators say 24-year-old Terry Marshall was on westbound Highway 17 late Wednesday night when he lost control of the car, went off the road, and hit a culvert.

The crash caused the car to flip, then hit a building, before coming to a stop and catching fire.

Marshall was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is the 14th traffic fatality of 2024 for MSHP Troop I.

World War II Veteran Jack Hamlin to be Honored in Springfield Thursday

On the 80th anniversary of D-Day and the invasion of Normandy, one Springfield resident will be honored for his bravery and contribution to the fight.

Jack Hamlin served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, as was tasked with plunging into the freezing water to rescue wounded soldiers.

Now 102-years-old, he is being honored by Mayor Ken McClure this afternoon in what will now be known as “Jack Hamlin Day” in Springfield.

A special ceremony will be held at the Monclair Assisted Living Facility Thursday afternoon at 1:30pm, where Mayor McClure will present an award to Hamlin.

Judge Rules Lindenlure Should Be Open to Public

A judge has ruled that a popular swimming hole in Christian County should be open to the public.

The appeals judge ruled that the road along the Finley River access known as Lindenlure is a public road and should remain open.

Property owners blocked Canyon Road at the access in 2020.

Two Charged After Car Chase & Shooting

Two people are now charged after a shooting incident involving a stolen car.

A probable cause statement says 47-year-old Nicholas Mackiewizc of Springfield allegedly stole a Ford Mustang from a residence. The owner of the Mustang, 38-year-old Robert Mitchell, followed him and tried to shoot the tires out to stop him.

Both were arrested next to Mercy Hospital.

Mackiewizc is charged with tampering with a motor vehicle.

Mitchell is charged with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon.

Both are in the Greene County Jail.

One Injured Following Shooting in North Springfield

One person is in the hospital after being shot at a home in Springfield.

Authorities were called to the scene near the intersection of Douglas Avenue and Madison Street in Springfield Tuesday morning.

They found the victim with a gunshot wound and rushed them to the hospital. The victim is in stable condition, according to police.

SPD has not made any arrests in the case at this time as the investigation is still ongoing and officers try to gather more information.

Man from Springfield Accused of Car Theft, Owner also in Custody

A man from Springfield is in custody after he allegedly stole a car and caused a car chase that included shots being fired.

Investigators say 47-year-old Nicholas Mackiewizc stole a 2000 Mustang earlier this week.

The owner of the stolen vehicle was able to track it using his cell phone’s GPS, which was inside the car.

Authorities have said that the owner was able to locate the car along South Glenstone and began following it.

At one point, the owner of the car opened fire and tried shooting out the tires in an attempt to stop Mackiewizc.

The chase finally ended near Mercy Hospital, when he crashed the car into another vehicle. The owner was able to pull Mackiewizc from the vehicle just before officers arrived.

Mackiewizc has been charged with tampering with a motor vehicle. The owner of the car was taken into custody on suspicion of unlawful use of a weapon, but no charges have been filed.

Cape Fair Campground Swim Beach Reopened

The U-S Army Corp of Engineers has reopened the swimming beach at the Cape Fair Campground.

The bacteria levels were tested in an acceptable range.

The beach was closed last week because of high E. Coli levels.
