Series of Crashes Lead to Shutdown of Eastbound I-44 Near Mt. Vernon

One person is dead and one critically injured following a fiery crash on I-44 west of Mt. Vernon Sunday afternoon.

Lawrence County Sheriff Brad Delay says deputies worked six crashes in that same area.

The first crash involved a semi truck that caught fire, causing the fatal and critical injuries.

Another wreck at the 46 mile marker involved two semi trucks and required extrication, with the other four crashes involving passenger vehicles.

The sheriff says each of the crashes were on eastbound I-44, and some may have been caused by traffic being slowed and drivers looking at the initial crash scene.

Traffic was diverted for much of Sunday night at Exit 44.
