Out of 88 county assessors in the state of Missouri, 14 of them are pushing back against a memorandum of understanding sent to them by the Missouri Tax Commission (MTC).
The commission sent a memorandum that outlined a plan to raise property valuation taxes, but some assessors are refusing due to the fact that the increase does not reflect the current real estate market conditions.
One assessor pushing back is Doug Bowerman of Lawrence County, who doubts that the “market’s going to sustain this” and that the valuation tax increase fails to account for local market realities.
Another dissenting assessor, Rita Lemmon of Polk County, agreed with Bowerman’s stance on the memorandum.
Due to the pushback, the MTC has decided to withhold funding from the non-compliant counties until they agree.
