Batman, the K-9, Joins the Greene County Jail

The Greene County Jail has a new furry friend on their K-9 team, and he comes with a fierce name.

Batman, the 2-year-old German Shepherd mix, will be handled by Officer Dillard.

The K-9 is also featured on limited edition merchandise for the department.

City of Springfield Awarded $6.4 Million from Department of Natural Resources

The City of Springfield will begin work soon on a new wastewater system after receiving millions from the Department of Natural Resources.

Officials say the department granted the city $6.4 million to renovate the city sewer system, including a new type of pipe-lining.

The lining is expected to reduce the amount of groundwater and stormwater from getting into the systems pipes, as well as lower overflow and improve the peak performance of the system.

Some of the funding came from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund.

The project is expected to be completed by March of 2025.

CMH Breaks Ground On Expansion

Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar celebrated its 41st anniversary by breaking ground on a new addition.

The new addition will be three stories and double the size of the hospital.

The total cost of the expansion will be $100 million dollars.

Construction will begin in 2024.

Strafford Business Filed False Tax Return

A business owner has pleaded guilty in federal court to filing a false tax return.

A Department of Justice news release says 53-year-old Phillip Turner of Strafford admitted that he used funds from his company to renovate his house and some property in Colorado.

He told his accountant the money was to renovate his company’s office.

Under the plea agreement, Turner must pay the Internal Revenue Service over $500,000 in restitution plus interest.

Driver Recovering after Crashing Van into a House in Springfield

A driver is expected to recover after crashing into a house in Springfield.

Investigators say the driver was at the intersection of Atlantic and Albertha Wednesday morning and ran a stop sign.

The van crashed into a nearby car and then into the front porch of the house.

The driver suffered minor injuries. No one was inside the home at the time of the crash.

Other details of the crash, including a potential cause, have not been released.

One Arrested, Another Injured Following Car Chase in Springfield

One man is in custody after leading police on a car chase, while his passenger is in the hospital.

Investigators say 45-year-old Dameon Horton was flagged down by police at the intersection of Kansas and Mount Vernon Monday afternoon when the chase began.

According to police, he ran through five different red lights, nearly hit multiple cars and reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour during the pursuit.

The chase finally ended when Horton crashed into a utility pole near the intersection of Sunshine and Marion.

A passenger in his vehicle suffered a broken back in the crash.

Horton is charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest by fleeing, and armed criminal action.

Officers believe Horton may have been under the influence of opioids.

New Stores to Battlefield Mall

Several new stores are coming to the Battlefield Mall in Springfield.

The stores include Kimberly and Company, a clothing store, and Rally House, which sells licensed college and professional sports teams apparel.

Astro Alley sells freeze dried candies, gourmet popcorn, and cheesecake. It opened in early August.

A new traffic light on Highway 60 in Republic has gone into opperation today.

The signal at the intersection of Highway 60 and Farm Road 203 had been flashing yellow for the past few weeks.

Missing Woman Died In Car Crash

A woman who was the subject of an Endangered Person Advisory was killed in a car crash.

The Highway Patrol says 93-year-old Effie Holden of Mountain View ran her car off Business 60-63 striking a road sign and a tree around midnight Tuesday.

Holden was pronounced dead at the scene.

She had last been seen at a grocery store in Willow Springs Monday.

She was reported missing after she failed to show up for an appointment.

Man Recovering Following Stabbing at a House in Springfield

A local man is recovering in the hospital after being stabbed at a home in Springfield.

Investigators say the victim and another person were asked to check on a friend’s home on Main Avenue near Chestnut Expressway Monday night.

Investigators say when they entered the home, they found a man and woman inside the house. The man attacked the victim and stabbed him.

The suspects then fled the scene, but the woman came back and was arrested at the scene.

Officers say they know the identity of the other suspect, but have not made an arrest at this time.
