Hall of Fame Broadcaster Art Hains Transferred to K-U Medical Center Following West Nile Diagnosis

The family of legendary broadcaster Art Hains is asking for continued prayers as the Voice of the Bears is transferred from Cox South in Springfield to K-U Medical Center in Kansas City.

Hains, 66, was admitted to the hospital last week after experiencing pain in his leg.

Doctors originally believed Hains had Guillain-Barre Syndrome, an immune system disorder, but the family was told on Sunday the new diagnosis is West Nile virus.

Hains, who has been in critical condition since last Thursday, when he was put on a ventilator, was airlifted to Kansas City late Sunday night.

Doctors believe West Nile caused acute flaccid paralysis, impacting Hains’ mobility.

Hains’ son, Chris, told Springfield News-Leader Reporter Wyatt Wheeler the transfer to K-U Medical Center will allow for a second opinion, additional testing, and hopefully treatment options.

Wheeler is Hains’ co-host on Jock 96-9’s weekday afternoon Sports Talk show.

The Kansas City Chiefs Radio Network, where Hains provides scoreboard updates for Chiefs broadcasts, held a moment of silence Sunday for the Missouri Sports Hall of Famer.

2 Dead in Officer Involved Shooting in Christian County

Two individuals are dead in an officer involved shooting that began as a traffic stop for a suspected drunk driver.

Early Saturday morning, Ozark Police pulled over Timothy W. Shafer (37), and Donna Bailey (23), after suspecting that the driver of the vehicle was impaired. This happened just before 3 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 14 and US 65. The driver did not pull over, and instead fled South on 65. Ozark PD did not pursue, but alerted the Christian County Sheriffs Office of the suspected vehicle.

Christian County deputies located the car just after 3:30 a.m. in Highlandville and attempted to stop the car, but were unsuccessful. This initiated a chase that led back into Ozark. CCSO was able to stop the car near 65 and Highway CC using a tactical driving maneuver.

Ozark and Nixa police had at this point joined CCSO to aid in the incident, after reports show that the driver, Shafer, attempted to run over a deputy. The two suspects did not respond to commands, at which point Shafer leaned out of the driver’s side window and brandished a firearm. Officers and deputies responded by firing their weapons toward the car. Both suspects perished in the incident.
