Driver of SUV Leaves Scene After Hitting and Killing Pedestrian in Springfield

Springfield Police are looking for the driver of a silver SUV who hit and killed a pedestrian early Tuesday morning at the intersection of Kansas Expressway and Division.

Officers say the victim had stopped in one of the northbound lanes while he was walking home around 5:30 a.m.

Police say the driver hit the man and continued traveling down west Division.

Investigators say there may be some damage to the front of the SUV.

Man Arrested After Standoff In Springfield

A man with a federal escape warrant has been arrested after standoff with a SWAT team at a house in Springfield.

Police got a call Monday afternoon saying that 38 year-old Corey Schafer was at a house in the 700 block of Hovey Street.

The SWAT Team evacuated nearby homes and blocked off the street to traffic.

The SWAT Team and U-S Marshals used tear gas, a robot and a K-9 unit to get Schafer out of the home.

Fifteen people came out of the house.

It’s unclear if they will face charges.

Former Health Care Worker Pleads Guilty to Child Sex Crimes

A former Greene County health care worker pleaded guilty in court to exploitation of a child.

Sergio Jonathan Ortiz pleaded guilty Monday to sexual exploitation of a minor after he was caught filming a young girl in the bathroom of a home he was working in.

Ortiz worked as a home health care worker and was caring for a disabled child at the time of the incident.

According to investigators, while at the home, the children’s mother caught Ortiz filming her other daughter in the bathroom taking a bath.

Authorities were alerted, and when they conducted their investigation, found dozens of videos and pictures that were deemed inappropriate and sexual in nature.

No sentencing for Ortiz’ case has been released at this time.

Charges Filed in 2021 Springfield Drive-By Shooting

Greene County Prosecutors have officially filed charges against a man they believe was involved in a drive-by shooting in May of 2021.

The shooting occurred on May 19, 2021, when investigators say Brian Wilson fired shots out of the window of his vehicle at the intersection of Sunshine and Kansas Expressway.

Witnesses at the scene described Wilson as the suspect, and he was arrested shortly after attempting to flee the scene.

The incident ended without an injury, but one car did sustain damage from the gunshots.

Wilson has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon in the case.

K9 Captures Stabbing Suspect

A man accused of stabbing a man Friday, who was on the run, was tracked down by the Wright County Sheriff’s Office and Mansfield Police Department with the help of a department K9.

Trebor Hailey, who is charged with Felony Armed Criminal Action and Felony First-Degree Assault, was found hiding under a tree. Wright County deputies utilized one of their K9s, bringing K9 Mick to the scene on Roote Avenue, leading to the capture of Hailey.

According to a Facebook post by the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, a man was stabbed, but the suspect (Hailey), left the area before law enforcement could get to the scene.

Heavy Rains Cause Flooding South of I-44

Heavy rains over the weekend into early Monday morning have caused flooding in a number of communities south of Interstate 44.

Between one and two inches of rain have fallen in the southern and eastern Ozarks, causing rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying areas to flood.

Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roadways, because most flooding deaths occur in vehicles.

West Plains Airport: 0.69 inch

Vichy/Rolla Airport: 0.49 inch

Flooding Potential in the Ozarks Sunday

Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected in the Ozarks through Sunday night.

The National Weather Service says the heaviest rain totals of two to three inches will be along and south of the interstate 44 corridor, with a Flood Watch is in effect until 7 a.m. Monday.

Locally higher amounts are possible.

The highest rain totals will occur from late Sunday afternoon through Sunday night.

Forecasters say a few strong to marginally severe storms will be possible late Sunday afternoon and evening over the southern Ozarks into south central Missouri, generally along and south of a line from Branson to Rolla.

Some isolated gusty winds and small hail may be possible within the strongest storms.

April Sales Tax Revenue Up in Springfield

April has been a good month for sales tax revenue in Springfield.

City officials say revenue is 10% above budget so far this month, bringing in $3 million more than was budgeted.

That money will be used for capital improvements and employee salaries.

Officials say even though revenue is above budget, inflation is putting some stress on the budget.

Branson Police Release Crime Report

The Branson Police Department released their 2021 Crime Report to the Board of Aldermen.

It showed the crime was down for the fifth year in a row. Crime decreased in Branson 32-percent between 2017 and 2021, however the report did mention Branson’s first homicide since 2016.

Branson Police Chief Jeff Mathews said the downward trend is due to the department being more engaged with the community.

He said he is encouraged by the trends.

Pre-Trial Conference Begins in Strafford Triple Murder

A Strafford man facing first degree murder charges is meeting with prosecutors before the case goes to trial.

50-year-old Jesse Huy faces three counts of first-degree murder and 3 counts of armed criminal action after confessing to killing his wife, 48-year-old Tonya Huy, and her parents Ronald and Linda Koehler in April of 2021.

According to reports, Huy killed the three because they wouldn’t leave his home. After killing the three, reports say Huy called police to inform them that he had killed his wife and her parents, and told dispatchers why he did it.

The pre-trial conference will be a preliminary hearing of sorts, introducing a variety of evidence and documents, etc. before the case heads to court for trial.

Huy has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
