Lawsuit Filed by Group Seeking to Re-instate Federal Unemployment Benefits in Missouri

A group has filed a lawsuit to re-instate federal unemployment benefits in the state of Missouri.

Missouri Jobs with Justice filed the suit in Cole County Circuit Court.

Federal unemployment benefits established to help people through the COVID-19 pandemic ended in Missouri on June 12th, but the federal program is not scheduled to expire until September 6th.

Greene County Collector’s Office Re-opens with Limited Staff

Four days after temporarily closing because of COVID-19, the Greene County Collector’s office has re-opened, but with a limited staff.

Collector Allen Icet says taxpayers can still use the Collector website at https://greenecountymo.gov/collector/ to look up statements, find receipts, and pay taxes.

Also, the Greene County Assessor’s Office remains open for assessment adjustments and the Clerk’s office will be available to print tax statements if there are changes to a taxpayer’s assessments.

Icet says a member of his office team will follow up on those contacts as soon as possible.

Zimmer Communications Hires Brian Hauswirth as News Director in Columbia

KWTO’s sister station in Columbia has a new news director, and he’s no stranger to the statewide news media and political scene.

Here are the details in a press release from Zimmer Communications:

Columbia, Mo. – Zimmer Communications is proud to announce that Brian Hauswirth has been hired as the next news director for 93.9 The Eagle. He will become the newest member of Wake Up Columbia, which airs every weekday from 5:30 to 9 a.m. He will also join the greater team at 93.9 The Eagle, which was just nominated for the NAB Marconi Radio Award for News/Talk Station of the Year.

Hauswirth comes to Zimmer Communications after spending five years with Missourinet as a Senior Capitol Reporter, covering the Missouri statehouse in Jefferson City. Prior to his time at Missourinet, Hauswirth served as the assignment editor at ABC 17 (KMIZ-TV) in Columbia for four years, where he earned awards from the Kansas City Press Club for investigative and beat reporting.

Hauswirth has years of experience working at local stations, including KMZU Radio in Carrollton, KTRS Radio in St. Louis, KRES-KWIX Radio in Moberly, and stations in Jefferson City and Columbia, where he earned numerous awards from the Missouri Associated Press Broadcasters. Hauswirth also earned “Best Radio News Program” in 2004 from the Kansas City Press Club.

Hauswirth has been a spokesman for the Missouri Department of Corrections and for the Missouri Department of Social Services, two of the largest departments in state government.

Hauswirth grew up in Florissant, where his parents still live. He is a 1993 cum laude graduate of Lindenwood College in St. Charles, with a double major in mass communications and history.

In addition to his new role, Hauswirth will continue his 23rd season as a college football scoreboard host at Learfield, where he handles the updates for five major colleges across the nation, including Mizzou, Alabama, Texas Tech, Purdue, and Wyoming.

Hauswirth will join Zimmer Communications on Tuesday August 17th.

Two Fatal Crashes in the Ozarks

A woman is dead after a crash north of Cassville.

The Highway Patrol says a car driven by 63 year old Julie Nistas of Seligman pulled on to Highway 37 from Farm Road 2160 and was struck by a G-M-C Pickup Truck.

She was taken to an area hospital where she died later from her injuries.

A motorcyclist is dead after a crash on Highway 90 near Jane in McDonald County.

The Highway Patrol says 56 year old Emerson Boshears of Bentonville, Arkansas ran off the road and struck a ditch.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shooting Upgraded to Homicide

Springfield Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man died from a shooting at a gas station Friday afternoon.

Officers went to the Conoco Village Mart on West Kearney and found 49 year old Jason Masters with a gunshot wound.

He was rushed to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact the Springfield Police Department.

Lebanon Shooting Death

A woman is dead and a man under arrest after a shooting in Lebanon over the weekend.

Lebanon Police identified the victim as 53 year old Brenda Rogers.

Prosecutors have charged her live-in boyfriend 61 year old Mark Tampow with first degree murder and armed criminal action.

Police do not yet have a motive, the investigation is continuing.

MSHP Confirms Recovery of a Missing Swimmer at Table Rock Lake

TABLE ROCK LAKE, Mo. — According to officials, recovery has been made for a missing swimmer on Friday, August 13.

As KOLR-10 reports, Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the swimmer as Bradley Bruce, 44, of Byrnes Mill, Missouri.

According to authorities, Bruce and his two sons were out on a rental boat on Table Rock Lake on Wednesday, August 11. At around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Bruce’s 13-year-old son fell out of an intertube.

One Man Shot on Kearney Street Friday Afternoon

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Springfield Police Officers responded to a scene where a man in a vehicle had been shot.

The shooting happened on Kearney Street in the lot behind the AM/PM Food Mart convenience store Friday afternoon.

Officers quickly began life-saving measures and secured the scene.

As KOLR-10 reports, the man was taken to an area hospital, and his condition is currently unknown. Officers are still searching for witnesses and looking through video cameras in the area to find out what happened.

Springfield Police Upgrade Crash to Homicide, Identified Victim

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Springfield police were dispatched to the intersection of Campbell and Sunshine for a vehicle crash on August 5, 2021.

When officers arrived, they found two males on the scene suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Authorities determined that the two men were shot in a parking lot at 925 South Avenue shortly before the vehicle accident.

As KOLR-10 reports, both men were transported to a local hospital and one of the victims was released after being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. On Thursday, August 12, the other victim died from his injuries at the hospital. The second victim has been identified as 34-year-old Calvin James III from Springfield.

Man Drowns in Stockton Lake

A man from Oronogo has drowned in Stockton Lake.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says Stephen Courtney, 51, stepped into an area of deep water, went underwater and didn’t resurface.

The drowning occurred Wednesday afternoon just after 4:00 p.m. about a half mile north of L1, which is south of Stockton.

The patrol’s Troop D reports this is the 15th drowning in this part of the state in 2021.
