BILLY LONG: It’s a Crisis, Mr. President

Editorial by U.S. Rep. Billy Long

One of President Biden’s campaign slogans was to ‘Build Back Better’. Unfortunately, he is doing no such thing when it comes to the illegal immigration crisis his policies have caused in just the first two months of his presidency. In fact, his policies are tearing down all existing norms and laws surrounding illegal immigration into our country. Essentially, President Biden has effectively hung a neon ‘Open’ sign along our border, and people are accepting the invitation.

The Biden Administration has termed what he has caused at the southern border as a “challenge” when really, this is a crisis the likes we haven’t seen in over a decade. In February, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents had over 100,000 encounters at the southwest border. 96.5% of those encounters were migrants apprehended attempting to cross into the United States illegally. This is the highest February total in fifteen years. We can only imagine the number of people who aren’t caught by CBP.

So how did we get here? The answer is simple: poor policy. Among President Biden’s very first actions as President, he stopped construction of the wall at the southwest border, halted deportations, and restarted the Obama-era catch and release policy. He also has provided illegal immigrants with incentives to cross the border illegally with his proposed immigration plan. His plan would grant millions of illegal immigrants lawful status in the United States, ultimately giving them a pathway to full U.S. citizenship. The prospect of granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants will only cause more to come, which is what we are seeing happen now. This proposal also does nothing to increase enforcement – no money for the wall, no money to ensure that our country has a secure border. The very idea of these policies possibly becoming law is causing an illegal immigration crisis of massive proportions. If the Biden proposal becomes law, I fear that what we are seeing now will only be a taste of what’s to come.

The worst part about this though is that the administration wants you to believe that this isn’t a crisis, it’s a “challenge,” and they will go to any length to misrepresent what is happening at our southern border. Along the border, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has migrant detention facilities to process illegal immigrants. The Biden administration has floated renaming these detention centers “reception centers”. This proposed name change underscores the fact that President Biden does not want to enforce any immigration laws and that when you arrive in the U.S. illegally, you will be welcomed at our “reception centers” where you’ll be released into the country.

This lax effort to enforce immigration laws that have been duly passed by Congress is nothing short of pathetic. The Biden Administration can attempt to sell the “it’s a challenge” and “reception center” fluff to the American public but no one is buying it. Just two months into Joe Biden’s presidency, the number of illegal immigrants has gone up month over month, our border patrol agents are completely overwhelmed, and illegal immigrants who have tested positive for COVID-19 are being let into the country. This was a completely preventable crisis and there is just one man who is responsible for manufacturing it: President Joe Biden.

Branson Entertainer Pleads Guilty To Fraud Scheme Involving Fake Charity

A man has admitted in federal court to bilking audience members at his show in Branson out of more than $85,000.

The U-S Attorney’s office says James Patrick Garrett, 65, Branson, got hundreds of people to give money to his non-existent charity for foster kids.

Garrett admitted to victimizing audience members from March, 2016 to August, 2020 at the conclusion of the John Denver Tribute at the Branson IMAX.

Here’s the full release from the U-S Attorney’s Office:

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A performer at a Branson, Missouri, theater pleaded guilty in federal court today to stealing more than $85,000 from hundreds of his own audience members who donated to his non-existent charity for foster children.

“For several years, this performer took advantage of his own audiences by pulling at their heartstrings while stealing from their pockets,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Teresa A. Moore. “He cynically and greedily victimized donors who falsely believed they were helping foster children. There’s no way to know how much cash was actually stolen, but we intend to seek restitution for the victims law enforcement has identified, as well as prison time and a hefty fine.”

James Patrick Garrett, 65, of Branson, waived his right to a grand jury and pleaded guilty to a federal information that charges him with one count of wire fraud.

“Today’s plea is a reminder that the United States Secret Service is committed to aggressively investigating and pursuing those who commit financial crimes,” said Brandon C. Bridgeforth, Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Secret Service Kansas City Field Office. “This defendant used his theater and platform as a performer, to prey on the generosity of those attending his performances. The defendant took advantage of these people who thought they were helping children in need, and then defrauded them. This investigation is a testament to the strong partnership between the Secret Service, the Branson, Mo., Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.”

“The Branson Police Department is always looking out for the best interest of our residents and visitors,” said Branson Police Chief Jeff Matthews. “We initiated this investigation and presented it to our federal partners at the United States Secret Service last year. They adopted the case and were successful in presenting it to the U.S. Attorney for prosecution. These kinds of relationships and partnerships help us protect our community and the values Branson is known for.”

Garrett performed the John Denver Tribute at the Branson IMAX. The show, which Garrett performed approximately six days a week throughout the year, consists of musicians covering songs made popular by the late John Denver and other classic country artists.

On Nov. 3, 2012, Garrett created Diamond Jym Ranch, Inc., with himself as president and a member of its board of directors. According to its articles of incorporation, Diamond Jym Ranch was ostensibly created for “the purpose of establishing homes for displaced or homeless boys or girls, to provide training and education for such children, to provide them with food, lodging, and their well being.”

By pleading guilty today, Garrett admitted that he victimized his audience members through a fraud scheme that lasted from March 2016 to August 2020. At the conclusion of each John Denver Tribute, Garrett solicited members of his audience to donate to Diamond Jym Ranch. Garrett falsely told audiences that he had created homes for foster children in Branson and Texas. Garrett told audience members their donations to Diamond Jym Ranch would go to support the foster homes and to support foster children. None of those claims were true, and Garrett knew they were false at the time he made the representations.

Garrett placed a donation box at the exit of the theatre where he performed the John Denver Tribute. Hundreds of audience members left their donations in the donation box. Garrett also directed audience members who wanted to make monthly or regular donations to Diamond Jym Ranch to mail their checks to his home address in Branson.

Garrett admitted that he used the money that he raised for his personal living expenses, which included frequently dining out at Branson restaurants, credit card debt, rent, taxes, mortgage payments, health insurance, and automobile insurance.

In total, over the course of many years, Garrett induced hundreds of John Denver Tribute audience members to make financial donations to Diamond Jym Ranch for the purpose of supporting foster children and homes for foster children. Garrett’s scheme to defraud resulted in a collective loss to his victims of at least $85,525.

The specific charge to which Garrett pleaded guilty today involves a $1,000 contribution made by an audience member identified in court documents as “D.C.,” a resident of Illinois. Garrett used D.C.’s donation for his own personal purposes and not to the benefit of foster children.

Under federal statutes, Garrett is subject to a sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison without parole. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Shannon Kempf. It was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service and the Branson, Mo., Police Department, as part of the U.S. Secret Service Financial Crimes Task Force.

State of Missouri Fast-Tracks COVID-19 Vaccination Eligibility for Phase 2 and Phase 3

By Friday April 9th, every adult in Missouri will be eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, regardless of their age or health status.

During Thursday’s briefing at the State Capitol in Jefferson City, Governor Parson announced plans to move up implementation of Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the state’s plan to make vaccine available to every eligible adult in the state.

Phase 2, which includes employees in construction, critical manufacturing, higher education, and remaining food and agriculture sectors, includes about 880,000 Missourians.

Phase 3 will extend vaccine eligibility to an estimated 1.1 million adults in the state who were not given shots under any other tier of phase.

Here’s the news release sent following Governor Parson’s briefing:

JEFFERSON CITY, MO) – During today’s briefing at the State Capitol, Governor Mike Parson announced that Missouri will activate Phase 2 of the state’s COVID-19 Vaccination Plan on Monday, March 29, 2021, and Phase 3 on Friday, April 9, 2021.

“With the progress we are currently seeing and vaccine supply expected to increase significantly in the coming weeks, we are well ahead of schedule with our vaccine plan,” Governor Parson said. “Supply projections are subject to change, but it is critical that we start preparing for this potential influx and ensure there is a consistent number of people who are eligible and interested in receiving a vaccine.”

The federal government has informed the state that COVID-19 vaccine allotments to Missouri are projected to significantly increase by the first week of April. The timeline for activating Phases 2 and 3 ensures that there is a consistent number of people who are eligible and interested in receiving a vaccine, allowing vaccinators across the state to continue vaccinating Missourians without delays due to those who are eligible but not seeking a vaccine.

Activation of Phase 2 is estimated to extend vaccine eligibility to approximately 880,000 Missourians that are essential to equitable economic recovery, including those employed in construction, critical manufacturing, higher education, and remaining food and agriculture sectors. This also includes homeless and disproportionately affected populations with an emphasis on racial and ethnic minorities, among others.

Phase 3 will be open to all Missouri adults, extending vaccine eligibility to an estimated 1.1 million Missourians who were not activated under any other tier or phase. A complete list of populations included in each phase as well as activation status is available at MOStopsCOVID.com/priority.

With all phases of Missouri’s Vaccination Plan activated, approximately 4.5 million Missourians will be eligible. The state estimates that approximately 60 percent of these Missourians are interested in getting a vaccine.

To date, one in four Missourians have initiated vaccination, and approximately 50 percent of Missouri’s 65 and older population have initiated vaccination. Vulnerable populations in currently activated phases that have not yet received a vaccine will continue to be eligible as Missouri moves into Phases 2 and 3.

“Missouri’s position is continuously improving on the COVID-19 front,” Governor Parson said. “With over 1.2 million Missourians having initiated vaccination, large increases in vaccine supply, and the activation of Phases 2 and 3, we are confident that we are winning the battle against COVID-19.”

We’ve had reports of accumulating snow north and west of Springfield, with a report of four inches covering the ground in El Dorado Springs, 1.5 inches in Appleton City, and two inches in Nevada.

Residual flooding will remain possible in areas that received heavy rainfall Wednesday afternoon and evening.
