Transgender Case Concerning SAFE Act Heard By Missouri Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of Missouri heard oral arguments on Wednesday over a state law that bans children from receiving most transgender treatments.

The opponents of the SAFE act have argued before the court that what lawmakers did in 2023 was unconstitutional and unjust, saying that the act targets gender transitions rather than medical use and the law violates Missouri’s Equal Protection Clause.

However, Missouri’s new solicitor general Louis Capozzi III, told the court that the law is constitutional because the U.S. Supreme Court in the 8th Circuit rejected claims that it violated the Equal Protection Clause, which he says “settles this case.”

Missouri’s Supreme Court will offer ruling over the matter as early as the next few weeks.

This case is one of three transgender-related cases that the court has heard oral arguments on.
