Proposed Ordinance Could Limit City Election Contributions in Springfield, MO

Springfield city councilman Craig Hosmer is proposing a city ordinance that, if passed, could change contribution rules in city council and mayoral elections.

Hosmer’s proposal would limit the amount of money that people and groups could spend on city campaigns to a maximum of just $2,600.

The ordinance is a main focus because it hits the floor between election cycles, as the next four city council seats are not up for re-election for another two years.

Hosmer says that this proposal is not due to suspicions of unfair sways in elections via large contributions from people or groups, but the concept of that happening does play a part in the limit proposal.

The proposal is being referred to the finance committee later tonight, and after processing, it can be put to a vote.

Tonight’s city council meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at the police and fire training center on West Battlefield Road.
