Fire Breaks Out At Embassy Apartments in Springfield

No injuries are reported after a fire broke out at the Embassy Apartments on east Elm in Springfield Tuesday morning.

Fire Department Battalion Chief Ben Houston says the flames started in a second floor apartment and were quickly contained.

Houston says smoke filled some of the units on two floors.

The cause of that fire remains under investigation.

Severe Weather Potential on Sunday

Shower and thunderstorm chances will occur across the Ozarks this weekend, with the potential for some strong to severe storms with this activity on Sunday.

The National Weather Service says there are some remaining uncertainties, including the exact details of timing, locations and hazard types.

Most of the Ozarks is currently under a Level 2 “Slight Risk” for severe weather on Sunday.

Springfield City Worker Killed In Landfill Accident

The city of Springfield says leaders are deeply saddened by the death of a worker Monday in an accident at the Springfield Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill.

A news release says the employee, identified as Larry Flett, 62, died when the articulating dump truck he was driving flipped over and caught fire.

Flett had worked as a solid waste operations associate at the landfill for nearly two years, and previously served as a Springfield police officer for nine years (1989-1998).

“This is a tragic day for the city of Springfield,” Interim City Manager Collin Quigley said in the release. “We are are deeply saddened by this death of one of our own and send our sympathies to the Larry Flett family and coworkers. He was an integral part of our team and his loss will be felt,” Quigley said.

The Department of Environmental Services, who oversees the landfill, will do an internal review of the incident.

The landfill, located at 3545 West Farm Road 34, is expected to remain closed on Tuesday.

Teenager From Springfield Dies From Injuries in House Fire

The Springfield Fire Department says a 13-year-old girl has died from injuries suffered in a house fire on March 19th.

Firefighters found the victim inside the home in the 300 block of south New Avenue during search-and-rescue operations.

When crews arrived, there were heavy smoke conditions at the house.

The teenager was rushed to a local hospital, where she later died.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

This is the second fire fatality in Springfield in 2025.

No Excuse Absentee Voting For April Municipal and School Board Elections Begins Tuesday

No-excuse absentee voting gets underway on Tuesday for the April 8th General Municipal Election.

Greene County Clerk Shane Shoeller says all registered voters will be able to vote absentee in person with having to give a reason for doing so.

In-person absentee voting is available at the Greene County Elections Center, 1126 north Boonville Avenue in Springfield Monday through Friday between 8:00am and 5:00pm, up to and including the day prior to the election and also on Saturday, April 5th from 9am-1pm.

In order to vote absentee, voters will need a nonexpired Missouri driver or non-drive license, or a nonexpired military ID, a nonexpired United States passport, or another photo ID issued by the United States or the state of Missouri, which is either not expired or expired after the date of the most recent general election.

Part of Lone Pine Shutting Down This Week in Galloway Area

Lone Pine Avenue in Springfield will close for about two weeks (weather permitting) between Barton and Galloway streets beginning Monday.

The city of Springfield says crews will be connecting the roadway to the newly built roundabout intersection.

Galloway Street remains open to eastbound traffic only between Bellhurst Avenue and Lone Pine, while eastbound to northbound traffic will still be able to get through at the current Galloway and Lone Pine intersection.

North and southbound motorists are being advised to detour around the work zone using Republic Road to Glenstone or Republic Road to Mentor Avenue/Ingram Mill.
