Springfield Police Department Testing New Technology to Detect Gunshots

The Springfield Police Department is testing out a new piece of equipment that could detect gunshots, and get officers to the scene of a crime much sooner.

In a news release from SPD, they are running trials on the Flock Safety Raven audio detection system, which are designed to recognize gunfire in real-time, save the audio for evidence, and contact authorities.

The sensors are only capable of recognizing gunshots, and do not pick up voices of any kind.

With no cost for the testing phase, according to SPD, they are taking the opportunity to see if the system can help reduce gun violence across the city.
