Martinez Found Guilty on 20 Sex Charges

A jury has found a Springfield man guilty of sexually abusing several children over a period of years.

Edward Martinez was found guilty on 20 charges including child molestation and statutory rape.

An investigation by the Republic Police Department found that Martinez abused as many as 13 children dating back to 1996.

Martinez is scheduled to be sentenced on January 9th, 2025.

Missouri Highway Patrol Warns Public Of New Scam

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is warning you about a new scam where the caller claims to be a State Trooper.

Scammers call people associated with individuals who have been involved in a crash. The caller then claims to be a Trooper investigating that crash, and tries to get money from the victim with false claims of pending criminal charges.

MSHP says any phone calls of this nature should be regarded as a scam.

Car Crash in Springfield, One Man Dead from Gunshot Wound

One man is dead from an apparent gunshot wound following a multi-car crash on National Avenue in Springfield.

Springfield Police say the man’s vehicle was travelling southbound on National when the car switched lanes and hit two other cars.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the man slumped over in the drivers seat, dead. Upon further investigation, authorities discovered a gunshot wound.

The shot came from a weapon that was found in the deceased’s truck. Investigators are still unsure as to how the gun went off. No other injuries were reported.

Marionville Man Charged Under New State Law

 

The Stone County Prosecutor’s Office has charged a man under the new Valentine’s Law for fleeing law enforcement.

Court records say 28-year-old Toney Kyger of Marionville is charged with three felonies, including aggravated fleeing a stop or detention.

A deputy tried to stop Kyger near Crane, but he allegedly sped away, eventually driving onto private property and striking the back porch of a house.

He got out of his car and tried to steal the deputy’s car.

He was arrested and taken to the Stone County Jail.

Collette to Run For Mayor of Springfield

 

A former city council member and business owner has announced her candidacy for mayor of Springfield.

Mary Collette was a city council member from 2001 to 2009. She has been an advocate for Commercial Street restoring several buildings since 1980.

She will face Mother’s Brewing founder Jeff Schrag in the April 2025 election.

Missouri State Football Will Open Next Season Vs. Their Biggest Opponent Ever

Welcome to the FBS Missouri State. The Bears announced Wednesday they will open next season in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to take on the USC Trojans. The game takes place August 30th, 2025.

This will be MSU’s first game as part of Conference USA (CUSA), a conference they joined earlier this year, Other non-conference games include: September 6th at Marshall, September 13th vs. SMU, and September 20th vs. UT Martin.

The conference schedule for MSU, and the rest of CUSA, will be announced at a later date.

Springfield NEA Wants To Bring Back Annualized Teacher Pay

The Springfield National Education Association is petitioning to bring back annualized teacher pay to Springfield Public Schools.

Last year, the School Board voted to change the pay schedule of hourly workers so they are paid only while school is in session. While total pay remains the same regardless, hourly workers do not get paid during summer break.

District Officials say the change was made under the advise of the district’s auditors.
