The Federal Railroad Administration is studying several new Amtrak routes across the country, including one that would connect New York to Texas by way of Springfield.
The proposed route would use Burlington Northern Sante Fe rail lines.
The route would run roughly parallel to I-44 from St. Louis through Springfield.
No timeline or funding for the service has been announced yet.
