Multi-Car Crash Forces Road Closure, Traffic Delays on Sunshine in Springfield

Drivers on Sunshine may be experiencing traffic delays for the time being following a two car crash allowing the roadway.

Police say the crash happened Thursday morning on Sunshine between the National and Kimbrough intersections in Springfield.

All lanes of the road are closed right now as investigators evaluate the scene and crews work to clean the area.

A potential cause of the crash and any potential injuries have not been released at this time.

Man from Aurora Receives Prison Sentence for Endangering the Welfare of a Child

A man from Aurora will spend the next few years in prison after pleading guilty to endangering the welfare of a child.

Prosecutors say 41-year-old Matthew Fries was originally charged with four counts of rape for repeated assaults on a 17-year-old girl at his home last year.

Those charges were later dropped after he entered an Alford plea, in which he does not admit to the crimes, but acknowledges there is enough evidence to convict him.

Fries was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Non-Injury Crash Slows Traffic Wednesday Evening

A non-injury crash at Kansas and Sunshine slowed traffic Wednesdsay evening.

The crash occurred on the Northbound lane of Kansas Expressway near the intersection with Sunshine.

An SUV ran into the back of a semi-truck, and the Greene County Sheriff’s office says no injuries were reported in the crash.

Dog Groomers in Court for Abuse Charges

Two Mountain Grove dog groomers were in court in Wright County on Wednesday morning for misdemeanor charges of abuse.

Michelle and Renee Butts are accused of being responsible for the death of Scooby, a service dog for a man in a wheelchair.

In June, Scooby was being groomed at Fur-Tastic Grooming in Mountain Grove, and during a washing session Scooby passed away from choking.

Michelle and Renee Butts have requested more time to choose whether to plead guilty, or to set a trial date, which was granted.

SPX Cooling Tech Coming to Springfield

A company based in Kansas is opening a new manufacturing facility in Springfield.

The Missouri Department of Economic Development says S-P-X Cooling Tech will employ more than 60 people at the Springfield plant.

The company makes cooling towers and heating exchangers.

Battlefield Mayor Resigns

The mayor of Battlefield has resigned. Debra Hickey has served as mayor of Battlefield since 2014.

Among her accomplishments, she signed a proclamation to make Battlefield the first autism-friendly community in Missouri, which led to the city of Battlefield received its first Innovation Award from the Missouri Municipal League in 2016.

Mark Crabtree will be the Mayor Pro Tem until the elections in April.

Man from Springfield Accused of Running “Chop-Shop” Out of His House

A man from Springfield is facing over a half-dozen charges for allegedly running a chop-shop in his home.

Springfield Police say James Cooley was under surveillance at the home for several months as they suspected he was running the illegal business.

Officers reportedly saw several stolen vehicles arrive at the home and leave with altered VIN numbers and painted different colors.

Investigators later found some of the vehicles at scrap yard’s in the area, with Cooley on file accepting the money for the scrap metal.

Three separate search warrants were executed in the case, with over 20 vehicles being seized by authorities between February and September of this year.

Cooley is charged with five counts of tampering with a motor vehicle and three counts of altering or removing an item number to deprive the lawful owner.

All eight charges are felony counts. He is currently being held in the Greene County Jail on a $25,000 bond.

F-B-I Starts Hate Crime Awareness Campaign in Springfield

The F-B-I is beginning a nationwide hate crime awareness campaign in Springfield.

You will begin seeing billboards on Springfield City buses and at bus stops encouraging citizens to report hate crimes.

The F-B-I says typically people do not report hate crimes.

If you are a victim of a hate crime or witness a hate crime, you are asked to report it to your local F-B-I office.

Boil Water Order For Mountain View

The City of Mountain View is under a boil order.

City officials say a leaking fire hydrant was the cause of the boil water order.

They say it could be three days before test results come back.

Residents should boil their water vigorously before drinking or using it to make ice cubes.

Margie Vandeven, Missouri Commissioner of Education, to Resign

After nearly eight years, Missouri Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven is resigning.

She announced Tuesday her intentions to step down on July 1, 2024 after taking over the role in 2014.

Vandeven led the education system in the state through several difficult periods, most notably the COVID-19 pandemic.

She received support from Governor Mike Parson, the Missouri School Boards’ Association and several other groups for her continued work for the states youth.

Reasons for why Vandeven is resigning have not been released.
