Springfield Teen Sentenced to 21 Years in Prison for Fatal Shooting

A man from Springfield has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for murder.

Keymond Brown was found guilty of second degree mirder in the death of 18 year old Jaiden Falls last year.

Brown was 17 years old at the time of the shooting, but was tried as an adult.

He was also found guilty of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

Cause of I-44 Crash Near Kansas Exit

Springfield Police say a crash on I-44 early this morning was caused by the driver of a truck falling asleep.

The box truck hit a guardrail, then flipped on its roof, ending up in the median near Kansas Expressway.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and the driver of the box truck was not injured.

SPD 50-60 Officers Short of Full Strenth

Springfield Police Department officials say that the department is 50-60 officers short of full strength.

Recource Management Officer Greg Anderson says the shortage has many causes, including difficulty recruiting officers nationwide and officers retiring.

Anderson says the department will not lower its standards to get more applicants.

Sign-ups for the next police academy in January 2024 end in October.

Springfield Police Investigating Fatal Shooting Near Virginia and Walnut Lawn

One man is dead and a suspect is being sought following a shooting late Thursday night in the 3400 block of south Virginia Avenue in Springfield.

Police received a call of shots fired around 11:00 p.m. and responded to the scene, where they found a man who had been shot.

The victim was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Police have spoken to witnesses to get information on a suspect.

No arrest has been made, but authorities don’t believe there’s a threat to the community.

UPDATE: Suspect Fatally Shot In Dade County Identified

Authorities have identified the suspect shot in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday in Dade County.

He has been identified as 54-year-old Wayne Simmons of El Dorado Springs.

Law enforcement was looking for him after he was identified as the alleged suspect in an armed carjacking in Barton County earlier that morning.

When deputies tried to take him into custody, he shot at them, and they returned fire, striking him.

They performed C-P-R on Simmons, but he died from the wound.

City of West Plains Is Under Boil Order

The City of West Plains is under a boil water order due to potential bacteria in the water.

The Department of Natural Resources recommended the boil order for the city after a controller malfunctioned causing particles to spike.

The city will lift the boil order when tests are bacteria free for two days.

UPDATE: Crews Find The Leak In Nixa Pool

The Nixa Parks and Recreation Department said in a press release Thursday afternoon that crews have found the cause of the leak at the city pool.

The cause of the leak is a crack in a 90-degree angle, pipe fitting, 8 feet under the concrete pool deck.

The Parks and Recreation Department hope to have the leak repaired so they can reopen the pool for the rest of the summer.

Man from Springfield Sentenced for Conspiracy to Sell Fentanyl, Heroin

A man from Springfield will spend over a decade in prison for his role in a conspiracy to sell fentanyl and heroin.

33-year-old Marquise Martin was sentenced in federal court Wednesday to 12 years in prison on one count of conspiracy to distribute heroin and/or fentanyl.

Investigators say he made a sale of what he claimed was heroin to an confidential information in August of 2019. Authorities later discovered the drug was fentanyl.

When he was arrested, he admitted to selling more than four kilograms of fentanyl between September and November of 2019.

Martin is now one of ten defendants in the case to be sentenced in the conspiracy.

His sentenced will be served without the possibility of parole.

Nixa Community Pool Still Closed from Leak

The Nixa Community Pool has been closed since a leak was found on May 22nd.

Parks and Recreation Director Matt Crouse says the leak is underground somewhere, but crews have not been able to pinpoint the exact location.

Crouse says a leak detection company is bringing in additional equipment to find the leak.

He says the leak caused the pool to lose between 50 thousand and 75 thousand gallons of water per day.

MO Department of Conservation to Decide on Price Increases for Hunting and Fishing Permits

The Missouri Department of Conservation will decide in September on raising the prices of hunting and fishing licenses.

Department Deputy Director Aaron Jeffries says costs have gone up and the additional revenue is needed to continue programs.

Many permits have not increased in price since the 1980s. An in-state hunting and fishing license would go up a dollar, from 19-20 dollars.

The department is accepting public comment on the increases until July 4th.
