Motorcyclist Killed On Battlefield

A motorcyclist is dead after a crash with an S-U-V. It happened at the intersection of Battlefield and Kimbrough.

Springfield Police say the motorcyclist was headed west on Battlefield when a car pulled out of a parking lot into the motorcycle’s path.

The motorcyclist swerved to avoid the car but slid into on-coming traffic and was stuck by the S-U-V.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The car left the scene, but the S-U-V driver cooperated with Springfield Police.

No names have been released at this time.

Second Suspect Identified in Shooting Death in Springfield

Police in Springfield are searching for a second suspect in the shooting death of a teenager last month.

Officers were called to a report of shots fired at the intersection of Forest and Calhoun the night of April 17.

When they arrived, they found a car at the intersection. Inside the car was 18-year-old Lavelle Rose III dead from multiple gunshot wounds, and a female driver with multiple gunshot wounds.

The woman was taken to an area hospital. She survived her injuries and is recovering.

Police say an investigation was conducted and an initial suspect was identified in 21-year-old Justin Bartels.

Further investigating found that a second suspect, Xavier Moore, was also involved in the shooting.

Bartels was arrested, and is facing charges of second-degree murder.

Moore, who authorities believe shot Rose, is charged with first-degree murder, along with other charges.

He is still at large as of the time of this writing.

Prosecutors Charge Two in North National Avenue Shooting in Springfield

Two people are facing charges, including murder, in the death of a man on North National Avenue in Springfield earlier this week.

Investigators say they were called to a home in the area at around 2:00 am Wednesday morning.

When they searched the residence, 42-year-old Jimmie Johnson III was found in the backyard with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

After a short investigation, police were able to identify two suspects, 23-year-old Ronald Curnow and 22-year-old Payne Morse.

Morse, who was arrested on Wednesday, is charged with tampering with evidence and a felon in possession of a firearm.

Curnow, arrested on Thursday, is facing first-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm charges.

Both men are being held in the Greene County Jail.

New Development in Springfield

More development is coming to the Southwest part of Springfield.

The arts and crafts store Michaels is building a second location near West Bypass and Sunshine. The store will open this Fall.

The Springfield Plaza Shopping Center at 3000 W Washita is being expanded, and another retailer is expected to go into the shopping center.

Storm Chances for Saturday

While most areas will remain hot and dry Saturday, there is an outside chance for a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service says the better chances for storm development are in Central Missouri from Rolla and Osage Beach up to Sedalia and Jefferson City.

Forecasters say a severe storm could occur in that area.

Douglas County Inmate Called Alleged Victim From Jail

A Douglas County inmate has been indicted by a grand jury after contacting alleged victims from jail.

A grand jury indicted Shawna Ross on three counts of tampering or attempting to tamper with a victim.

She faces charges of sex crimes with a child.

Douglas County Sheriff Chris Degase says she placed multiple calls to her alleged victims using another inmate’s phone and pin number.

A judge has ordered Ross to stand trial for the sex crimes in December.

City of Springfield Looking for Architects

The City of Springfield is soliciting qualification statements from firms interested in providing professional architectural services for the Springfield Police Headquarters Facility Improvement project located at 321 E. Chestnut Expressway.  

The Springfield Police Headquarters building was originally constructed in 1969 and underwent previous renovations in 2005. The current improvements will include the replacement of the building roof, HVAC rooftop equipment and carpet as well as renovations to the upper and lower-level conference rooms and upper-level corridor kitchenette. The project will also include the evaluation and refinement of Police Department program needs.

The Request for Qualifications and accompanying exhibits can be viewed at springfieldmo.gov/RFQ. Qualified architecture firms desiring consideration are invited to submit their digital Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) by 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6 via email to PWRFQ@springfieldmo.gov.

The total budget for the Police Headquarters Facility Improvement Project is approximately $2 million funded through the Law Enforcement Sales Tax, General Fund Carryover Funds and a 2022 Byrne/JAG Grant. The target for project construction is early spring of 2024.

St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner Resigns

Embattled St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner announced Thursday that she will resign amid calls from Republican leaders for her ouster.

In a letter to Gov. Mike Parson released by Gardner’s office, she said she will step aside effective June 1.

Gardner is the city’s first Black prosecutor and a Democrat.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey took legal steps to remove her from office in February, alleging negligence.

Gov. Mike Parson released a statement on Kim Gardner’s resignation:

(JEFFERSON CITY, MO) – Today, Governor Mike Parson released the following statement upon receiving St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner’s resignation letter:

“Our office has officially been notified of the resignation of Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner, effective June 1, 2023.

We fully understand the gravity of this situation and approach our duty to appoint a replacement with the utmost seriousness. We will immediately start the replacement process according to the Missouri Constitution and Section 105.050, RSMo.

We are committed to finding a candidate who represents the community, values public safety, and can help restore faith in the City’s criminal justice system.”

Nixa Police Trying to Locate Missing Teenager

Authorities in Nixa are asking for the public’s help in locating a missing teenager.

16-year-old Kyah Kendrick was last seen May 1 at around 1:00 pm leaving his home.

Investigators say he left on foot, and is considered endangered due to a medical diagnosis.

They also say Kendrick’s known associates may be armed and dangerous.

Police believe he may have ties to gang-related activity, and may be in either the Springfield or Rogersville areas.

He was seen leaving the house in a brown Carhartt jacket, grey sweatpants, white and grey sneakers with patches of yellow and orange.

Wastewater Leaking into Bull Shoals

A fire in the Sugarloaf Wastewater Treatment Plant near Diamond City, Arkansas casued partially treated wastewater to be released into Bull Shoals lake.

The fire in late April damaged the plant, which has been releasing partially treated wastewater into the Sugarloaf Creek area of the Lake.

The plant is being repaired. In the meantime, officials recommend avoiding contact with water in that part of the lake.
