Grant Program Awards Missouri Over $250 Million for Broadband Internet

Residents in need of internet statewide could soon have their needs met following a more than quarter of a billion dollar grant from the federal government.

Governor Mike Parson says that the state was awarded the grant from the Department of Economic Development, or DED.

Officials say the total grant is $261 million and will be divvied out to 60 different businesses and groups for various projects.

A statement from Governor Parson regarding the announcement can be found below:

“We’re proud to announce the recipients of the Broadband Infrastructure Grant Program, which represents a major step forward in strengthening Missouri’s internet connectivity. Our goal with American Rescue Plan Act funds is to make investments that have a lasting, positive impact for Missourians statewide. Today, we have accomplished that for broadband expansion, which is vital to supporting education, health care, business, and agriculture in today’s economy.”

Winter Storm Watch Issued For Areas Along and South of I-44 For Heavy Snow Tuesday Evening Through Wednesday Morning

A winter storm is expected to hit the Ozarks starting Tuesday evening and continuing through Wednesday morning, bringing heavy snow at times and the potential for four to six inches of snow.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for areas along and south of I-44, including the city of Springfield, beginning Tuesday night.

Locally heavier amounts of snow will be possible.

Forecasters say roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous.

Travel could be very difficult.

The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes.

Potential Winter Weather Tuesday & Wednesday

The National Weather Service says temperatures will remain seasonably cool for through the weekend and going into Monday.

The highs will be in the 40s during the day and overnight lows will be in the 20s.

A mix of light rain and snow will spread over parts of the area this weekend.

Little to no snow accumulations expected for this area.

There is a strong potential storm system that will bring wintry precipitation with accumulation to the area Tuesday and Wednesday.

City Utilities Power Outage Update

More than 22 hundred City Utilities customers in West Springfield were without power on Thursday afternoon after a trash truck crashed into a power line.

CU Officials say poles and power lines were pulled down in an area around West Seminole and Farm Road 131.

Power has since been restored.

Residents Remain in Hollister Mobile Home Park Set to be Vacated

Two residents of the Yacht Club Mobile Home Park in Hollister are still living in the park after residents were told in August that they had to move by the end of the year.

Hollister City Administrator Rick Ziegenfuss says the two remaining residents are waiting for their homes to be transported so they can relocate.

More than 60 families had to relocate so investors can go ahead with their development plans for the park.

Authorities Searching for Woman Accused of Stealing Thousands in Lottery Tickets

Detectives in Greene County are looking for a woman they believe stole close to $6,000 in lottery tickets and cigarettes from a Springfield gas station.

Investigators say there were three separate burglaries that took place, with the most recent being on January 7.

The two previous burglaries occurred on October 14 and December 4 of last year.

Authorities estimate the total amount of cigarettes and lottery tickets that were stolen exceeds $6,300.

Surveillance footage pulled from the convenience store shows the woman having long brown hair and a large tattoo on her lower back.

Three Dead In Wrong-Way Crash On James River Freeway in Springfield

Three people have died and three others are in the hospital with critical injuries following a wrong-way crash on James River Freeway early Friday.

Police say 911 got a call around 1:00 a.m. about a pickup going west in the eastbound lanes on James River near National.

Shortly after that call, the pickup hit a large SUV head-on near West Bypass.

Authorities say the three fatalities were in the SUV, along with the three people who were critically hurt.

Two more people had minor injuries.

The driver of the pickup also has critical injuries, and police believe the man, who’s in his 60’s, may have been intoxicated.

Laclede County Sheriff’s Office Warning About Scammer Using Their Phone Number

The Laclede County Sheriff’s Office is warning people about scammers pretending to be employees of the sheriff’s department.

A post on the sheriff’s office Facebook page says a person is calling Laclede County residents and threatening to put them in jail if they don’t pay them for a fine with gift cards or an app.

The caller is spoofing the sheriff’s department phone number and uses the name of former sheriff’s department employees.

The Laclede County Sheriff’s Office says to hang up on the person.

Fire at Monett Restaurant

An early morning fire Thursday damaged a Monett restaurant.

The Monett Rural Fire Department says a fire broke out in the kitchen of Cubs Café on State Highway 37.

Both Monett Rural Fire Department and the Monett Fire Department along with the Purdy Fire Department responded to the scene.

The fire was contained within thirty minutes.

There were no injuries.

The restaurant will be closed for the rest of the week.
