Developer Ask City To Postpone Rezoning Application

The developer of a controversial project in the University Heights neighborhood has asked the city to postpone his application.

B-K-&-M- LLC had requested to rezone around three acres of the property at the intersections National and Sunshine.

The proposed development faced criticism from the neighborhood residents after a historic house on the corner was torn down.

Ava Man Charged With Producing Child Porn

A federal grand jury has been charged a man with producing child pornography.

A federal indictment alleges 66-year-old Harold Lloyd Blair of Ava used a minor to produce child pornography.

Blair sold his house to Douglas County and when county workers were demolishing the house, they found a file cabinet contained child pornography inside a wall.

FBI Offering Cash Reward for Information on Escaped Cass County Inmates

The FBI is offering a $10,000 reward for information related to two inmates who escaped the Cass County Jail.

According to reports, Trevor Sparks and Sergio Perez-Martinez escaped the jail on December 5th, and authorities have been searching for them ever since.

The FBI is coordinating with local law enforcement to locate and find both fugitives.

Officers say Sparks and Martinez both have several tattoos, and have both been charged and convicted for several felony crimes.

Sparks was convicted of narcotics distribution, criminal conspiracy in connection with two murders, and several violent assaults.

Martinez pleaded guilty earlier this year to meth distribution and money laundering.

The $10,000 reward will be given if the information leads directly to the arrest of the suspects. An additional $5,000 has been offered by U.S. Marshals.

SPS Board to Vote on Bond Issue for Renovations

The Springfield Public Schools Board of Directors is set to vote on a bond that would renovate several schools in the city, costing close to $220 million.

Reports say, if the issue is passed, Pipkin Middle School and Reed Middle School would receive funding for brand-new schools to be built.

Also included in the bond are storm shelters for six SPS elementary schools: Holland, Mann, Watkins, Wilder, Pittman and Cowden.

Officials also say Pershing Middle School’s building would get major renovations.

If the board approves the bond, it will appear on the ballot for voters next April. Spokespeople for the district say the bond will not increase taxes for residents.

Springfield Man Charged with Assault and Impersonates Police Officer

A man from Springfield has been charged with assault and impersonating a police officer.

Nathan Smith is charged with two counts of false impersonation of a law enforcement officer, unlawful use of a weapon, and fourth degree assault.

Smith allegedly approached the victim in a convenience store parking lot on West Sunshine, told the victim he was a police officer, and demanded that the victim leave.

When the victim refused, Smith allegedly assaulted him with a knife.

Drunk Driver Hits Trooper Near Fair Grove

A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper escaped serious injury on Monday after a driver went the wrong way on Highway 65.

Troopers say a van was driving South in the Northbound lanes just south of Fair Grove early Monday morning when it hit the trooper’s vehicle.

The driver of the van had minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Newly Opened Whataburger in Republic Causing Traffic Issues

Fans of the Texas based fast food restaurant Whataburger now have an option in southwest Missouri.

The restaurant, based in Republic opened briefly on Monday for drive-thru only service, but officials say traffic is becoming an issue.

In a Facebook post from the Republic Police Department, officials have devised a plan to limit traffic problems near the business.

Reports say the only way to reach Whataburger will be the westbound right lane on Highway 60, with officers on site to help with traffic control.

Officials for the burger chain say the business will be fully operational in the coming weeks.

Arrest Made After Car Crash Injures Three

One person has been jailed after a car crash over the weekend.

Police say that two cars were travelling East on Chestnut when one car rammed into the other, causing that car to spin out of control and hit another truck in the Westbound lane.

Reports say that the two drivers were involved in a disturbance before the crash, leading police to speculate the crash was intentional.

Three individuals were injured during the crash, none of which were life threatening.

Avian Bird Flu Found In Webster County

The Webster County Health Unit has been informed by state health and conservation officials that avian influenza or bird flu has been detected in the county.

According to a press release from Webster County, the virus has been found in both domestic flocks and migratory wild birds.

The Health Unit’s epidemiology team is working closely with the state health and conservation officials to monitor the situation.

The Health Unit is recommending people avoid handling dead or sick birds.

FBI Searching for Escaped Cass County Inmates

The FBI is now involved in the search for two inmates who escaped from the Cass County jail on Monday night,

Trevor Sparks is 5’11”, 185 pounds with brown hair and goes by the nickname “Nephew”. He has tattoos on both arms, including KC, bricks, and gun shells on his right forearm.

Sergio Perez Martinez is 5’7″, 130 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes, and a scar on the left side of his face. He has tattoos on the back of his neck, left forearms, and on his back.
