Greene County DARE Program Receives Donation From Masons

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office’s D.A.R.E. program received a donation of $6,000 from the Masonic Lodges of Greene County.

The D.A.R.E. program is an educational drug awareness classroom program that has been around since 1991.

The program is completely funded by donations.

The program currently serves four school districts in the area: Ash Grove, Fair Grove, Walnut Grove and Strafford.

City of Springfield Awards over $30 Million in ARPA Funds

The Springfield City Council has allocated over $30 million for various projects and area improvements.

On Wednesday, $31 million was awarded, with an additional $7 million set aside for future projects to assist with homelessness in the city.

Springfield has nearly $40 million in funds granted to them from the American Rescue Plan Act passed in 2021.

A total of 10 projects will be granted funds, which are expected to be formally approved in August.

The list of projects, and the amounts they have been granted, include:

  • Jordan Creek Renewal Project- $500,000
  • Cooper/Killian Park- $7.3 million
  • City-wide Housing Study- $500,000
  • Grand Street Underpass- $750,000
  • Restore SGF Project- $1 million
  • Historic City Hall Renovation- $4 million
  • Art Museum Education Wing- $3 million
  • Ozark Greenways Chadwick Flyer Trail- $3 million
  • Homeless Projects- $7 million
  • Boys and Girls Clubs- $2 million

SPS Back to School Bash

The Springfield Public School District will hold a back to school bash this Saturday in preparation for the upcoming school year.

Doctor Ron Woodward, Executive Director of Secondary Education says there will be activities for all ages of students, free sports physicals, and immunizations. Parents must register online for sports physicals, and you can do that by clicking here.

The event is for families of Springfield Public Schools only.

Lieutenant Governor Mike Kehoe declared a State of Emergency because of severe flooding in the St. Louis area.

He signed Executive Order 22-05 on Tuesday, on behalf of Governor Mike Parson, who is out of the country on a trade mission.

The order declares an emergency exists and activates the Missouri State Emergency Operations Plan, which allows for local jurisdictions to receive help from state agencies.

Division Street To Close For Construction

The City of Springfield will close the westbound lane of Division Street to traffic between National and Glenstone avenues beginning Wednesday, as part of the Division Street Reconstruction project.

Eastbound traffic will be allowed using a single open lane.

Westbound traffic is advised to follow the posted detour utilizing Glenstone Avenue, Commercial Street, and National Avenue.

The work zone is expected to remain one-way eastbound for a significant portion of the one-year duration of project construction.

First Round of ARPA Funds Awarded in Greene County

The Greene County Commission announced Tuesday they have awarded over $750,000 to local businesses in their first series of awards.

In a release Tuesday, the commission revealed a total of $760,000 awarded to 57 business throughout the area, specifically for small businesses with less than 50 employees.

The funds were allocated by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The commission has a total of over $56 million in funds to be awarded before December 31, 2024.

Presiding Commissioner Bob Dixon says the commission chose to assist small businesses first because, “the Commission believes that our small businesses are the foundation of our community’s economy.”

Parson Speaks on St. Louis Flooding

Governor Parson released a statement in regards to the substantial flooding in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

First responders in the area are using boats as they work to rescue motorists and residents impacted by the historic flooding. The National Weather Service in St. Louis says more than 8 inches of rain have fallen at Lambert Field since midnight, breaking an all-time daily record from the August 1915 Galveston Hurricane.

In a release from the Governors office, Parson stated “I have been briefed on the extreme flooding in the St. Louis area. We appreciate the rapid and professional response of local first responders and emergency managers involved in flood rescues and other protective measures. We also thank our Missouri State Highway Patrol and MoDOT crews for working alongside local teams.”

All four major interstates heading into St. Louis have had at least one closure due to flash flooding.

The Governor is currently overseas on a trade mission, and has briefed Lt. Governor Mike Kehoe on the situation should he need to step in to assist.

Highway Patrol Investigating after Driver Hits Bear in Texas County

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation after a rare crash involving a bear in the Ozarks.

According to reports, the vehicle was travelling along Missouri Highway PP north of Cabool Monday morning when it collided with the bear.

Authorities have not said what the condition of the driver is, or if there were any occupants in the vehicle.

The bear was killed in the crash.

Highway Patrol troopers want to warn drivers of the increasing bear population in southwest Missouri. They want drivers to remain aware and to keep an eye out for signs of bear crossings when travelling.

Senator Ted Cruz Rallied in Springfield for Senator Eric Burlison and AG Eric Schmitt

Saturday night, Republican Senator from Texas Ted Cruz headlined a rally in support of Senator Eric Burlison’s Congressional run, and Attorney General Eric Schmitt’s bid for US Senate.

The rally, hosted by the Truth and Courage PAC, and held at Ocean Zen in Springfield, was a packed house at over 400 supporters in attendance.

Cruz doubled down on his endorsements of the two Erics, and touted their legislative records as proof of their conservatism and trustworthiness for the job.

State Representative Ben Baker Emceed the evening, which began with a speech from Burlison, followed by Schmitt, and capped by Cruz.

Both Burlison and Schmitt will be on the August 2nd GOP primary ballot for their respective races.
