Woman from Springfield Found Guilty in Road Rage Incident

A woman from Springfield has been found guilty by a jury in a road rage incident that led to a woman’s death.

Elizabeth McKeown was found guilty Friday to charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Barbara Foster.

McKeown instigated a road rage incident in November of 2018 at the corner of Sunshine and Campbell, when McKeown admitted that she rear-ended Foster because she was driving too slowly.

Following the accident, investigators say Foster got out her car to check the damages, then McKeown ran her over.

Defense attorneys argued that cough medicine that she was taking was the cause of the incident, saying the medicine induced a psychotic episode.

McKeown is set to be sentenced on September 2. Her defense said they intend to appeal for a new trial.

Springfield Police Department Creates Homicide Unit

With an increase in homicides and violent crimes in Springfield in recent years, SPD has unveiled a new unit to combat the issue.

The Springfield Police Department has announced a new homicide unit dedicated solely to the crime. According to a statement, the unit will consist of five full-time detectives and one supervisor on call 24 hours per day.

The unit was years in the making, according to reports, but a shortage of staff prevented its creation.

Captain Tony Vienhage says he hopes the unit will lead to a decrease in murders and violent crimes in Springfield. The city has seen an increase in homicides every year since 2018.

So far in 2022, SPD reports there have been seven homicides investigated in the city.

AG Schmitt Subpoenas Springfield Public Schools

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt has subpoenaed seven school districts in the state, including Springfield Public Schools.

The subpoenas seek information on decisions to use student surveys that Schmitt says ask about student’s sexuality and race, and their parent’s income and political beliefs.

Springfield Public School’s spokesman Stephen Hall says the subpoenas are part of an ongoing attack on public education by the Attorney General. Hall says school districts are incurring significant legal fees to defend themselves and it is costing taxpayer dollars.

Attorney General Eric Schmitt is a candidate in the U.S. GOP senate primary to replace retiring GOP Senator Roy Blunt.
