Road Crews Making Good Progress in Southwest Missouri

Road conditions around the Ozarks are improving Friday as the sun comes out and crews continue to plow and treat highways.

By early afternoon, the MoDOT Traveler Information Map is showing highways in the Springfield metro area as clear or mostly clear to partly snow covered.

Several roads in the southeastern Ozarks were still showing “snow covered” on the map.

The main roads have been plowed in Springfield and continue to improve, but side roads and county roads, neighborhood streets and many parking lots are still snow packed.

If you’re traveling to Kansas City or St. Louis, roads are clear in the K-C area, but partly to mostly snow covered in St. Louis.

MoDOT says as of Friday morning, crews have traveled 1,000,000 miles since the start of the storm on Tuesday.

Springfield Digging Out From Biggest Snowfall Since 2011

The sun shining brightly on Friday is a welcome sight for Springfieldians digging out from the biggest snowfall in the city sine the blizzard of February, 2011.

The National Weather Service says the storm, which rolled into the area Wednesday night before moving out Friday morning, put down a total of 9.5 inches of snow.

Meteorologists say Springfield officially received 1.0 inch Wednesday nigfht, 6.8 inches on Thursday and 1.7 inches early Friday.

We had considerable blowing and drifting of snow, with some drifts two to three feet deep.

Snowfall amounts varied across southwest Missouri, from 9.5 inches in Springfield and Willard to 8.2 in Republic, 8.0 inches Branson, Ash Grove and Osceola, 7.5 inches in Neosho, 6.5 in Stockton and Lamar, with a general 4-6 inches along I-49 northwest of Springfield and 4-6 inches southeast of Springfield around West Plains.

Friday night will be our coldest of the year so far, with temps getting down to 0-7 degrees before getting up to 35 with sunshine on Saturday.

MO National Guard Helping Highway Patrol

About 600 Missouri National Guard members are assisting the Missouri State Highway Patrol during the snowstorm.

Governor Parson activated them as part of the State of Emergency Tuesday.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain John Hotz says that having the Guard assist them is better than having people stranded for hours like what happened on Interstate 95 in Virginia in January.

The State of Emergency order ends March 3rd.

Springfield-Branson National Airport Open But Dealing With Cancellations

Winter weather is causing problems for airports around the country.

The Springfield-Branson National Airport is staying open thanks to the crews who are keeping the runways and parking lots cleared off.

Public Information Manager Kent Boyd says that 62 percent of the scheduled flights have been cancelled because of snow in Dallas, Denver and Chicago.

He says it will take the airlines two to three days to get back on track after a snow storm.

Crews Warn Drivers of Possible Refreezing Overnight

City Utility workers and MoDOT say with snowfall slowing down in the Ozarks, coupled with dropping temperatures overnight, many roads may be effected by ice in the overnight hours of Thursday and into Friday.

Officials have warned that with the refreezing, crews working to maintain the roadways may be slowed down, causing further driving difficulties.

The National Weather Service has urged drivers to stay off of roadways and remain at home, if at all possible.

Christian County Reveals Plans for Bridge Replacement Project

Officials for Christian County announced plans Thursday for bridge replacement construction. The project, of an estimated 8.1 million dollars, will replace Green Bridge, Red Bridge and Hawkins Bridge with in the county.

Each bridge is over 100 years old and the County says is in dire need of revitalizing.

A portion of the estimated $8.1 million comes from the newly passed American Rescue Plan Act, which was one of President Joe Biden’s first moves when taking office. The bill was signed into law in March of last year.

No timeline for the start or completion of the construction project has been announced.

Several Flights Cancelled at Springfield-Branson National Airport

A number of arrivals and departures at Springfield-Branson National Airport have been cancelled Thursday.

But the airport is open, and several flights have arrived in Springfield and others have departed either on time or delayed.

Thursday Winter Storm Update

The National Weather Service says we’re still on track to get 5 to 8 inches of snow across the Ozarks from this winter storm.

Forecasters say light to moderate snow will continue through early Thursday afternoon, with blowing and drifting of snow.

Additional light snow is expected Thursday night, with up to one additional inch possible.

Travel is treacherous in much of the Ozarks Thursday morning.

The MoDOT Traveler Information Map shows all roadways in southwest Missouri and really south of Interstate 70 being snow covered.

A number of arrivals and departures at Springfield-Branson National Airport have been canceled because of the winter storm, but there are some flights still on time, so check ahead with your airline before heading to the airport.

Springfield Public Schools Closed Again Thursday

With a winter storm advancing throughout Southwest Missouri, included snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures, Springfield Public Schools have cancelled classes for the second consecutive day.

The cancellation also includes any virtual learning, as the district is limited in the number of virtual or alternative method of instruction they can utilize, according to Chief Communications Officer for SPS Stephen Hall.
