The Last Full-service Gas Station in Springfield is Closing its Doors

Mike Landis, KOLR

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – It’s the end of an era for getting gas in the city.

Brentwood Service Center, located at the intersection of Glenstone Ave. and Seminole St., stood the test of time as the city grew up.  As other small independently-owned gas stations closed over the years, Brentwood became the sole remaining example left in the city.

As KOLR-10 reports, the place is just as much a gas station as a museum, with creaky wooden floors, a statue of Abe Lincoln, and reminders of when owner Chip Wagoner’s father bought the place in 1966. Back then, U.S. 65 came down Glenstone right in front of the business.

Springfield Police Officers Say Thank You to Fallen Independence Officer Blaize Madrid-Evans

The Springfield Police Department sent officers to Independence, Missouri on Thursday to pay their respects to Officer Blaize Madrid-Evans, who was shot and killed in the line of duty on September 15th.

But those officers didn’t just come to mourn the loss of a brother in blue, but to say thank you.

Madrid-Evans was just two months into his career and just 22 years old when he lost his life.

Before he died, the officer made a decision to be an organ donor.

Springfield Police Officer Mark Priebe, who was paralyzed after being run over by an SUV on the parking lot of police headquarters in 2020, needed a kidney due to an unrelated development and had been waiting for months on a donor list.

Late last week, his family learned Officer Madrid-Evans was a match.

Last Saturday, Priebe received his kidney in a transplant surgery at a hospital in St. Louis.

Priebe’s wife, Heather, says Officer Madrid-Evans is a hero and doesn’t even know it.

Domestic Violence Shelter in Polk County to Expand Soon

Polk County’s only domestic violence shelter, House of Hope, is green-lit for a much needed expansion. After having too little space, and facing the possibility of turning away victims and their children, House of Hope purchased two new buildings from Bolivar’s Southwest Baptist University: a former theatre and dormitory. The non-profit’s 1 million dollar budget is set to expand the shelter from having 18 beds to as many as 60-90 beds, dorm rooms, space for victim advocates, dining facilities, a room for televisions and computers, and more. The Assistant Executive Director, Danielle Ward tells Ozarks First’s Chris Six and David Chasanov that she hopes the project will be completed before Winter. Ward also shared that one concern with the expansion is an overflow of referrals from other in-need area shelters.
