Bicentennial of Missouri’s Statehood

Today is the Bicentennial of Missouri’s becoming the 24th state to enter the United States of America.

Congress allowed for admission of Missouri as the 24th state, a result of the Missouri compromise of 1820.

Missouri was the first state entirely west of the Mississippi river to be admitted to the union.

President James Monroe issued a statehood proclamation on August 10, 1821.

St. Charles was the first state capital until 1826.
