BILLY LONG: Being Tough on China Works

Editorial by: U.S. Rep. Billy Long

In last week’s Long’s Short Report, I discussed how raising the corporate tax rate will make the United States less competitive on the global stage. During the Obama era, the corporate tax rate caused companies to move tens of thousands of jobs to other countries, including to our main geopolitical competitor, China. China is a country that will do anything to supersede the United States as a world leader. They steal American intellectual property, impose unfair trade practices, and use unethical and forced labor policies to lower the cost of manufacturing goods. We have seen what this mix of Chinese trade practices and a high corporate tax rate has done in the United States before – slow economic growth and decrease manufacturing jobs.

As President Trump promised during his campaign for president in 2016, he stood up to China by renegotiating trade deals and imposing tariffs to directly counter unfair trade practices by the Chinese. These tariffs worked. In conjunction with the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, President Trump was successful in bringing manufacturing jobs back to the United States and putting immense pressure on China to play fair. Luckily for China, they weathered the storm through the presidential election and are now dealing with President Joe Biden, who on the campaign trail loudly denounced President Trump’s tariffs, claiming they would only hurt the American economy and businesses.

What you haven’t heard is that despite his strong criticism for President Trump’s tariffs on Chinese goods, President Biden has not removed them. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo has called his tariffs “effective” and U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai has publicly stated that she has no plans to change President Trump’s trade policy on China. This is a complete turnaround from what President Biden stated on the campaign trail.

But we are only a few months into the Biden presidency, will he make good on his promise and end the tariffs on China? I have encouraged him to leave these policies in place. The United States currently runs a $310 billion trade deficit to China, making us a significant source of wealth for the Communist Chinese government and fueling China’s economic growth. While China remains a significant trade partner, President Trump’s tariffs have reduced the trade deficit by over $100 billion from its high of $419 billion. This is a significant hit to a tyrannical regime that uses these funds to cheat other countries, commit human rights atrocities, and buy influence with our adversaries. It is also a significant boost for American manufacturing and trade with allies as $100 billion worth of goods is now being manufactured here at home, or being acquired from a more friendly country.

To put it simply, China is a bad actor. The Obama Administration rewarded China’s bad behavior by regularly rolling over to their demands and supporting a high corporate tax rate. These policies opened the door for U.S. businesses to move jobs to China and other more competitive economies. President Trump’s thoughtful policies finally put the Communist Chinese regime on its heels and demonstrated that the United States was through with their antics. There was a new sheriff in town and Beijing didn’t like it. During his campaign, President Biden said everything that China wanted to hear, and their man got elected. If President Biden keeps his campaign promises, we can expect a stronger and more resilient Chinese economy and a more emboldened Chinese regime.

Walk-ins Welcome at Mega Vaccination Event in Springfield Thursday and Friday

The Springfield-Greene County Health Department announced Thursday that the mega-vaccination event at Missouri State on Thursday, April 8, and Friday, April 9 will be open to walk-in appointments.

The vaccination event will use the one-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine, so the event is ONLY for people who have not received a first dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.

Anyone who is in Phase 1 or 2 can schedule an appointment or walk-in on either of the two days. Because the state is lifting restrictions on April 9, allowing all adult Missourians to get vaccinated, anyone 18 years of age or older can schedule or walk-in on Friday.

Missouri State officials told OI that while walk-ins will be welcome to participate in the vaccination event, those who schedule their appointments ahead of time will be able to get through the process significantly faster. Registration can be done at www.vaccine417.com. Walk-ins are encouraged to call before coming to the site at 417-874-1211.

If you have registered, you do not need to arrive early.

Anyone receiving the vaccine should bring a photo ID and the registration number emailed or provided to them when they scheduled their appointment.

City Utilities will be providing free rides on their buses to the vaccination site. You need to tell the driver you’re going to get vaccinated at the event. You would need to use Line 5 or Line 12 to get to the Hammons Student Center.

Free parking is available in Missouri State Lot 20 & 25, and Bear Park South. You will then check in at Hammons Student Center on the east side of the building between HSC and JQH Arena.

OPINION: Boycott MLB

Editorial By Mike Zimmerman

As a forever fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, player and coach, I say it’s time to boycott MLB games!  MLB has devolved into an arm of the extreme elements of the Socialist Democrat Party.  That’s fine, but it’s up to the fans to send a message they will hear loud and clear, don’t go to the games, don’t watch them on TV, don’t buy the merchandise, and limit the purchase of products that sponsor their extreme Left-Wing agenda.

We saw the same thing out of MLB last year when they etched in every mound on opening day, BLM.  We all know how many riots and property damage that were caused during and after BLM “mostly peaceful” protests last year.  BLM is a radical Marxist organization, calling for the elimination of the “nuclear family, demanding reparations, abolishing the police and prisons.  So last year on opening day when MLB had every team etch BLM on the mounds, that’s what they were endorsing.  Apparently, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred loves BLM and taking orders from Joe Biden, so this year he decided to move the MLB All-Star Game out of Atlanta because a duly elected State Legislature voted to change the voting laws to require a photo ID.  This new law signed by the Governor and denounced by our unifier in chief Joe Biden as “Jim Crow on steroids” and “Jim Eagle”, whatever that is supposed to mean, was enough to have MLB and corporate CEO’s jump out of their socks!  Delta, Coca-Cola, Apple, Twitter, Zillow, Uber, Facebook, Google, Bank of America, American Express, Cisco, Merck, American Express have all condemned the new voting law in Georgia as racist.  Obviously, they didn’t read the bill, they just want to be part of the “cool crowd”.

Hopefully millions of baseball fans across the country that have done their homework and realize that nothing whatsoever in this law is racist, will give them all a collective middle finger!  We used to go to baseball games to ESCAPE the drudgery of our daily lives and root for our favorite team and players.  We could high-five the guys around us when one of our guys hit a homerun or made a great defensive play and it wouldn’t make any difference who they voted for or what color they were.  Leave it to MLB to take all the fun out of the game and inject politics.  They have taken all the fun out of the game and replaced it with perverted political bigotry.

That’s why I’m calling for a boycott of MLB by the fans.  My hope is that if enough people boycott MLB, and the companies that support the same socialist cancel culture causes, we can hurt them where it counts, in their bottom line.

Make no mistake, the Left and their army have declared war against us.  They have labeled us as racists because we don’t support their divisive plans.  If you are a White male, you are the enemy.  Curiously, you can find White male liberals apologizing for being White!  The Left have practiced and perfected the art of division and they are winning the cultural battle because we aren’t taking them on.  The battle must be joined because they are taking control over this country.

The far-left is entrenched in all branches of government and in the upper echelon of our military.  Identity and diversity are the all the rage in corporate board rooms.  To hell with the most qualified candidate, do they check all the “diversity” boxes?  Let’s find a Black transgender woman.  She can be White, as long as she “self-identifies” as Black.  Is Elizabeth Warren available?

Rob Manfred’s decision to move the All-Star Game out of Atlanta was the final nail in the coffin for me.  Maybe there are enough woke minded people in America to fill the stands of MLB stadiums or watch the games on TV, but count me out!  I hope you will join me!

SGF Yields to Set Up at Fort & Madison Week of April 5

The SGF Yields program will be doing a series of checks during the week of April 5 near McGregor Elementary School at Fort and Madison.

Three police officers will be stationed for approximately four hours at a time on different days monitoring for driver compliance with pedestrians in the crosswalk. A plainclothes officer will act as a pedestrian, a second will function as a spotter, and a third will be in a patrol car ready to stop those who do not properly yield to the pedestrian.

There will be posted signs alerting drivers they are approaching a “Yield Check” location. Drivers stopped for violating the city’s ordinance will be given a warning and educational materials. Citations will be given after a three month warning period.

Pedestrians who do not follow regulations can also be given warnings and educational materials from the officers so as not to put others at risk.

The program is funded through a $21,120 grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Springfield Council Eliminates Most Occupancy Restrictions April 16

The Springfield City Council made it official Monday night, voting 8-0 to remove COVID-19 occupancy restrictions in most cases starting April 16.

The “Yellow” phase of the Road to Recovery Plan would allow the return of buffet dining, allow events of 500 people or less to resume, and remove occupancy restrictions. However, counter seating would still be restricted, and events of 500 or more would still only be permitted 50 percent occupancy.

“Although we’ve made progress on many fronts, the number of people getting fully vaccinated against COVID-19 has been slower than we anticipated,” Acting Springfield-Greene County Health Department Director Katie Towns told City Council. “Our return to normalcy is incumbent upon individuals receiving vaccine.”

The vaccination rate for Greene County as of Monday was 19.25%, with the yellow phase requirement being 25%. However, because the other two requirements of being below 40 new cases of COVID-19 per day and less than 50 individuals hospitalized in COVID isolation were met, the Council made the move effective April 16.

Towns touted the upcoming registration event at Missouri State that will use the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine as a way to boost county vaccination numbers.

“I’m very pleased that we have a tremendous opportunity with the mega vaccine event April 8 and 9 at Hammons Student Center on the Missouri State University campus. We hope to vaccinate 10,000 people during this two-day event,” Towns said.

In addition to the mass vaccination event, a mobile COVID-19 vaccination unit called Greene County CARES will be taking vaccine to harder-to-reach parts of the county when vaccine is available. The program is a partnership of Jordan Valley Community Health Center, Springfield-Greene County Health Department, Greene County Medical Society, City of Springfield, and the United Way of the Ozarks’ Give 5 program.

Springfield Police Release 2020 Crime Report; Under 22% of Sex Crimes Cleared

The Springfield Police Department has released their 2020 Crime Report.

The report is different than in previous years as the SPD has moved to the National Incident-Based Reporting System, the same as the system used by the FBI for crime statistics.

The major difference between NIBRS and the previously used Summary Reporting System (SRS) is that under SRS only the most serious crime would be reported to the FBI. So if a drug deal ended up with a homicide, only the homicide would be reported in the crime statistics.

Under NIBRS, every crime is tracked and reported.

“We hope citizens and our community partners find the 2020 Crime Report informative. We also hope that by taking a deeper dive into the data, it will allow us to better identify trends and find long-term solutions,” Police Chief Paul Williams said in a statement.

In 2020, the SPD reported cataloging 25,458 total crimes.

In the crimes against persons category, the department reported 23 cases of murder or nonnegligent manslaughter, with 17 of those cases cleared. All four negligent manslaughter cases were cleared.

The rate sex related crimes cleared was significantly lower than murder, manslaughter, or simple & aggravated assault. Only 21.5% of Rape, Sodomy, Sexual Assault with an Object, and Fondling cases were cleared by the SPD compared to 100% of negligent manslaughter, 74% of murder/nonnegligent manslaughter, 44.5% of aggravated assaults, and 45.2% of simple assaults.

In the crimes against property section, several categories showed low clearance rates. In the burglary/breaking & entering category only 13.2% of cases were cleared; theft from building only 8%; theft from a motor vehicle had a 2.9% clearance rate; motor vehicle theft cleared at a 17.2% rate.

In the crimes against society area, the department turned in a 69.1% clearance rate for drug/narcotic violations, and a 72.2% clearance rate for Drug Equipment violations. The department also cleared Weapons violations at a 65.3% rate.
